Last week was an exciting one for our Wimbledon nursery and pre-school – the Firefighters came to visit! The children were transfixed as they watched the firefighters in their big red truck and were thrilled to meet the brave men who protect us from fire. It was a great opportunity for the children to learn about fire safety and the importance of having a working smoke alarm in your home.
The Red Watch from Wimbledon fire station drove down to Willows in their fire engine full of equipment ready to show the children. Each child got a turn to climb up into the cab of the fire engine, it was a long way up! They also got to try on a real firefighter’s helmet and hold the hose head, which the firefighters explained spun around quickly to increase the pressure of the water. It was great to see the children’s faces light up as they got to experience what it’s like to be a firefighter for a day. The Red Watch were very patient in answering all of the children’s questions and they even managed to teach them a few fire safety tips along the way. Thanks so much to the Red Watch for taking the time to visit us!
The pre-school children were so excited to meet the firefighters, that they treated them to a rendition of “London’s burning” and then asked them lots of questions. The firefighters were happy to answer all the children’s questions and give them some stickers and child-friendly fire safety information. The children had a great time meeting the firefighters and learning about fire safety. We were very grateful the Fire Brigade were able to take the time to visit us to help consolidate the children’s learning about ‘the people who help us in our community. It was a great opportunity for the children to learn about important community service, and we are very grateful to the firefighters for their time.
